How to clean wallpaper
After you hang wallpaper, you can get the best of it by keeping it well-maintained. Making sure that your wallpaper is taken care of helps in retaining its colors and lengthens its life. Taking care of your wallpaper, needless to say, entails cleaning it every once in a while.
Most wallpaper manufacturers include instructions on how to clean wallpaper; they label their products as either “washable” or “scrubbable.” While most of today’s wallpapers are made of coated vinyl — which makes cleaning a tad easier — some wallpapers still require meticulous cleaning measures to ensure optimum preservation of its fabrics. The cleaning process also varies, depending on whatever stains you have on your wallpaper. If you see any spot or stain, it is best that you clean them immediately before the stain settles deep into the fabric. If it is on kitchen wallpaper or laundry room wallpaper border, you can wipe it off immediately with a wet cloth. Wallpapers installed in high-activity and high-moisture rooms like these are more prone to stains. Majority of kitchen wallpaper, laundry room wallpaper border, and those used for children’s rooms are made of vinyl, which are more resistant to water and stains, and a lot durable than those made of paper. It is important to remember that cleaning vinyl-based wallpaper is different from cleaning a paper-based one.
As mentioned earlier, manufacturers have a manual on how to clean wallpaper, but here are some general guidelines in keeping wallpaper spic-and-span:
For simple dust and dirt:
- Line the floor with plastic to prevent any damage from excess water and spillage;
- Whisk away any solid particles of dust and dirt with a brush;
- Add a mild detergent to a bucket 2/3 full of water, enough to produce some bubbles;
- With a sponge, dip and then squeeze out excess water and wipe the wall from top to bottom;
- Rinse sponge constantly and repeat step 4 until the whole wall is covered;6. With a dry towel, wipe excess moisture from the wall.
The same process can be done on kitchen wallpaper, laundry room wallpaper border, and other vinyl-based wallpaper. For stubborn stains, here’s what you need to do:
For crayons:
- Rub Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the stained area, that alone is enough to remove any crayon spot;
- If there is no Mr. Clean Magic Eraser around, wet a damp cloth with a mild detergent (do not use strong abrasives as they can damage the wallpaper’s fabric and colors);
- Towel the wall dry.
For marker stains: If the marker is washable and the stain is on vinyl-based wallpaper, like kitchen wallpaper or laundry room wallpaper border, a simple buff with a wet towel can remove the stain, otherwise, you need to do the following:
- Clean the spot with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser;
- If Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is not available, apply a paste made of water and baking soda to the stain and to the towel;
- Rub the stained area GENTLY;
- If the baking soda paste fails; apply alcohol and rub gently (Test alcohol on a spare strip of wallpaper first; alcohol can cause discoloration and major damage to most wallpapers).
Stains that have already embedded themselves into the wallpaper are hard to remove and might require the use of solvents. For your protection, always wear gloves to protect your hands.

Painting wood fence
If you have a wood fence it’s a beautiful thing but over time the elements wear it down and you may have even scratched it with a lawn mower or snow shovel. Either way eventually it needs to be repainted and as with most projects around the house this one is easy to do yourself and low cost.
Besides good weather, this is what you’ll need: paint, possibly primer, a good brush, a roller (choose the size depending on the fence), a roller extension, cleaning supplies (rubber gloves, a pale with soup and warm water, a couple of rags), sand paper, scraper, maybe a kneeling pad.
Now, before you start painting you have to make sure the fence is clean. Here are some suggestions:
- Remove any grass, shrubbery, seeds, and the like from the fence.
- Wash off dust, soil, or any other dirt like bird poop with warm water and a little detergent.
- If the fence touches any parts of the house you may want to separate the edges with painters tape.
- It’s a good idea to have some card board or thin sheets of wood handy to slip under the fence so you don’t get the brush dirty from the ground when painting the underneath. It will also help block any branches that may still be in the way.
While you are cleaning, inspect the fence for other problems:
- Is any paint chipping? If so you’ll need to do the following. Scrape off the old paint and sand the edges a little to smoothen them out. If the wood is bare you may need to add a little primer on the spot. If so, let the primer spots dry before moving on to the real paint.
- Loose planks? If you find parts of the fence are seriously beginning to wear you may need to nail them back or replace the piece.
- Termites: They show up when you least expect it. If you find signs of them replace those planks too.
Painting: Ok; you’ve made it to the real part of the job. Don’t worry if it took a while to get here. It’s better to have the fence ready and free of all other obstacles than have to stop painting in the middle because of one of the above issues.
- Stir the paint to make sure its all one color and not clumpy
- Pour your paint in the roller pan at the bottom.
- Take your roller, dip it in the tray, and begin from the top down. Maybe use the brush for the top open grain. If you hit those spots first you can remove any dripping as you make your way down.
- Use the brush for any touch ups. Hopefully you won’t need a second coat but if you do just follow the same steps.
NOTE: If your fence has a plank and then opening and then another plank (your standard white picket fence), it’s a good idea to do one plank at a time but do the fence in sections. For instant do a row of one frontal side with one edge and then come back and do the other when it’s dry. By doing this you prevent touching the opposite edge when the paint is still wet.
